Artist Notes

I am so happy with how beautifully this painting came out, yet debated whether I should share it. Probing inside as to why, my hesitance revealed itself to be a weed growing from internalized shame and fear around sex. I remember in high school showing a friend an artwork that was so beautiful yet it depicted something my younger self was taught to see as an inherently disgusting act. Some remnant of this sentiment must remain deep inside, as I wouldn’t be so hesitant about sharing paintings of heteronormative coupling. But it’s not just homophobia that feeds this weed of hesitation; it’s also sex negative views that no doubt have some roots in my Christian upbringing. There is this notion that sex, especially queer sex, is inappropriate, that seems to lurk in my subconscious. This is despite human sensuality and form being the most dominant themes in my artistic journey.

This painting evokes within me a passionate yearning to be dominated; I find myself grappling with a pressure to make excuses for this aspect of my sexuality, although there's no wrongdoing involved. Feeling compelled to explain such intimate desires stems from shame. This shame extends to my art as well. Still growing into my identity as an artist, I felt as though art centered around sex conflicts with my goal to use art for activism and advocacy. I would tell myself that art about sex didn’t make the world a better place even though I find value in art that explores human sexuality boldly. In refusing to make excuses for my desires, making art without shame, and being brazenly outspoken against those who find me contemptible, I am advocating for my desires to not be shameful; art for a more sex positive world.
